Floating building for 10,000 people

Floating building for 10,000 people

Russian architect Alexander Remizov considers that a floating building where 10,000 people can live could be a model of life in the future. Remizov called his prototype the Ark.

Ark is made of wood, steel and strong ETFE plastic and could be adapted to all environments. Ark could be used for various purposes, including accommodation in an emergency and as a hotel. Remizov argues that the structure allows rapid construction of the facility that may be floating.

After he mastered degree on the subject of settlements that do not pollute the environment, he decided to continue working in the same field with his company Remistudio and make a modern building that will be in harmony with the environment.

He solved the problem of power supply with his colleague Lev Britvinom. In the center of the building is set a generator of electricity using wind power, and the facility is on the outside covered with solar panels. If the building is set on the water, Remiziv says that it could use the thermal energy of water.

Although it is a prototype, Remizov believe that "Ark" could be used for various purposes, from apartments, offices and hotels, and also up to 10,000 people can be placed in it.

The biggest myths about gain weight

The biggest myths about gain weight
There is almost no woman that at least once in their lives did not try to go on a diet or at least listened to some advice from friends. Eat this, but not at any time of day, try out this food, but only once a week and from this you will gain weight, and because of this you can have serious problems... But how to cope in that jungle of information? Here are four biggest myths about gain weight.

1. Eat every three hours so you will not slow down your metabolism
If you feel hungry for several hours it does not mean that you are starving the body, because it would take three full days with minimal food intake. Also, if you want to maintain normal blood sugar levels you do not have to eat every few hours.

So if you feel hungry, pick up some energy bars or similar sweet pleasure, ant that does not mean that you will therefore gain weight.

2. Do not eat too late because you will gain weight
Eating food after 20 hours will not affect the accumulation of kilograms of the same meal if you ate earlier that evening. Studies have shown that much more important how many calories you have entered the body, not in time.

If with your crazy schedule you are unable to have so-called lunch-dinner drink before 20 hours, do not worry, it's important to choose only a normal meal.

3. Caffeine is bad for your health
Most of the statements that explain how caffeine is bad for your health are not true. Drinks that contain caffeine such as popular coffee will not dehydrate your body, they are not bad for your heart and do not cause a stroke.

In fact, caffeine has many useful properties for your body. It stimulates brain activity, and studies have shown that caffeine partially protects against Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease. But as in everything else, should be moderate.

4. Chicken meat is the healthiest meat
Another falsehood. The real piece of beef or pork meat can be as easy as a piece of skinless chicken breast, and also provided chicken or turkey meat can be just as fat and calories and juicy as thick beef steak. Pure red meat contains twice as much zinc, iron and vitamin B12 than turkey or chicken.

If you like a particular meal and enjoy the food you're not allowed to become a slave to calories and starvation. Be moderate in everything.

Things you can do with a hairdryer

Things you can do with a hairdryer
Hairdryer was for a long time really used only for drying our hair. But with passing time people have found other uses for this small home appliances.

Small device that exists in almost every household around the world certainly is the hairdryer. They are found in various shapes and sizes, and besides the classic electric, there are devices for drying that work on batteries.

However, since 1920. year, when he appeared on the market today there are those who seek new ways of its implementation.

From the bathroom, hairdryer is easily moved to the kitchen! And so it can help with quick setup and fix the icing on the cake. Air Heat speeds up the process. Or if dough will not peel off, heating the bowl bottom with a hairdryer is of priceless help.

Despite the various hazards that are presented, people use hair dryer to melt the freezer and refrigerator, and thawing frozen locks and windows during the winter, with peeling labels ....

Not exactly the most ideal way to remove dust, but the army of fans is using a hairdryer to remove dust from computer screen and TVs with a little help of the hot air. Wet boots, shoes can take on a horrible smell if they do not dry in time. The help came, of course, with a hairdryer!

However, in a sea of incredible ideas are allocated some implementation of a hairdryer that does not endanger health. Removal of adhesive bandages and plasters can be very painful, but also it can cause a new injury. A glue heated with hairdryer will allow the safe removal of bandages.

Manufacturers, however, advise customers to keep the primary purpose of the device so the possibility of accidents would be reduced to a minimum.

Choosing contact lenses

Choosing contact lenses
Lenses are either glass or plastic. Plastic is more common. It’s lighter, the color range is greater, and it’s easily coated to adapt to light conditions. Green or gray lenses block light without distorting vision, give truest colors, and protect delicate skin around eyes. On overcast days brown or yellow lenses give the best visual contrast. Pastels (blue, pink) are mostly for looks. Use soap and water to clean your contact lenses: dry them with a soft cloth because the grit from a paper towel, or your shirt, may leave scratches. Tiny bottles of cleansing fluid from opticians are convenient, but no more effective. When the light is too bright, your natural defenses take over, the pupils of your eyes contract and you squint. Usually these natural reactions don’t provide adequate protection. Squinting cannot keep out ultraviolet rays or infrared rays. The results of over-exposure to the sun’s glare can be eyestrain, headaches, or a feeling of fatigue, and wrinkles around the eyes. A pair of effective sunglasses is an ideal solution. Always choose sunglasses with 90 percent to 100 percent UV protection, indicated on a lens, sticker or a tag.

The first lighthouse

The first lighthouse
The first documented lighthouse was built in 200 BC on the island of Pharos by the Egyptian Emperor Ptolemy. It was the Lighthouse of Alexandria. Considered as one of the Seven Wonders of the World, it is thought to have been 492 ft (150 meters) high – about three times taller than modern lighthouses. Romans emperors built many lighthouses to assist their navigators. In 90 AD, Emperor Caligula ordered a light house at Dover, England. It is the oldest lighthouse in England and still stands in the Dover Castle grounds. The world’s tallest brick lighthouse, the Lanterna at Genoa, was built in 1543. It still stands proud at 246 ft (75m) tall. The world’s first stone lighthouse was the Smeaton Eddystone (picture below), built just south of Plymouth, England in 1756 by John Smeaton, the “Father of Civil Engineering.” It was lit with only 24 candles. The Eddystone lasted 47 years until it was floored by fire. It was then dismantled and built on a neighboring rock. Today, lighthouse lights are the equivalent of 20 million candles.

The World now and 1000 years ago
In the whole world there were less than 20,000 motorcars 100 years ago and the maximum speed limit was 10 mph (16km/h). 1063 ft (324 meters) tall, the Eiffel Tower was the tallest structure in the world. Cannabis and heroin were available over the counter at corner drugstores. And pneumonia and influenza were the leading causes of death. In 1910, the population of the United States was 92 million and the world population was 1.7 billion people. Today, there are more cars manufactured than their is demand for it. There are about 1 billion cars and light trucks on the road. The maximum speed limit in most cities is 30 mph, yet the traffic is so congested that the average speed is just over 10 mph. The tallest building is the Burj Dubai, at 2,640 ft (800 meters). Cannabis is not available over the counter, and is very expensive. The leading causes of death are heart attacks, cancers, strokes, and motorcar accidents. Today, the population of the earth numbers almost 7 billion and 300 million roam the United States.

Early versions of Google, YouTube...

Early versions of Google, YouTube...
The most popular websites such as Facebook, Google, Twitter or YouTube were changing their look over the years and developing in the way in which their creators could only dream of. Some of them have changed beyond recognition ...

Design of Google has not changed that much since the first version of the site, but the services and opportunities provided by the customers certainly are. The site was launched in the 1998 , and the creators Sregey Brin and Larry Page have made a simple design for it.

Early version of YoutubeYouTube is the biggest online video service launched in 2005, and then it practically had no interface and it did not indicate video content. The first video clip that is uploaded on YouTube was the recording of one of the founders of the site Jawed Karim, who uploaded a video Me at the zoo.

Early version of FacebookWhen Mark Zakerberg launched today the most popular social network with 800 million users, it was initially intended only to students at Harvard. Facebook was then called The Facebook and in the upper left corner was a digitally made character, actor Al Pacino.

Early version of FacebookThe name Yahoo is the acronym for Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle. One of the first Web browsers initially had a very simple design and modest possibilities, but it soon became the website with news ...

Early version of AmazonThe best known site for online shopping came on the 1995 , as a book shop on the Internet. Jeffrey Bezos, founder named the site after the river Amazon. Website still has a very similar design as in the beginning.

Early version of TwitterIt is almost impossible to recognize the increasingly popular social networking site Twitter, when you see its original design. The site on the front page had printed the word Twttr, which was inspired by the site Flickr, and SMS messages. Design of Twitter has changed more than six times in the past five years.

Early version of The New York TimesThe New York Times exists from 1851, but the website has been active since 1996. The first version of the site had only one photo on the front page while the website today is rich with pictures and videos.

Early version of MyspaceMyspace was founded in 2003. as competition for Friendster and in the height of popularity between the 2005. and 2007. the company News Corp bought it for 580 million dollars. Eggs are necessary for healthy body

Eggs are necessary for healthy body
Eggs contain choline, which is necessary for healthy cell membranes in the human body. Eggs also contain all the essential protein, minerals and vitamins, except Vitamin C. But egg yolks are one of few foods that naturally contain Vitamin D. Choline stimulates brain development and function and helps preserving memory. Eggs also are good for your eyes because they contain lutein which helps prevents age-related cataracts and muscular degeneration. In fact, eggs contain more lutein than spinach and other green vegetables. The color of the egg shell is not related to quality, nutrients or cooking characteristics. White shelled eggs are produced by hens with white feathers and white ear lobes. Brown shelled eggs are produced by hens with red feathers and red ear lobes. Brown egg layers usually are slightly larger and require more food, thus brown eggs usually cost more than white eggs. An egg shell has as many as 17,000 pores over its surface. A whole egg is about 3 tablespoons worth of liquid, the egg yolk measures about 1 tablespoon of liquid. There are about 70 calories in an uncooked egg and 77 calories in a cooked egg.

Everyone enjoys sports

Everyone enjoys sports
Addiction to competitive and solitary sports cuts across all social-economic strata and throughout all the demographics. Whether as a passive spectator or as a participant and practitioner, everyone enjoys one form of sport or another. Sports cater to multiple psychological and physiological needs. In this they are unique: no other activity responds as do sports to so many dimensions of one’s person, both emotional, and physical. But, on a deeper level, sports provide more than instant gratification of primal instincts, such as the urge to compete and to dominate. There is always a second chance in sports, often denied us by Life and nature. No loss is permanent and crippling, no defeat is insurmountable and irreversible. Reversal is but a temporary condition, not the antechamber to annihilation. Safe in this certainty, sportsmen and spectators dare, experiment, venture out, and explore.

10000 Years Old Tribe

10000 Years Old Tribe
The Hadza people are testimony to some of the oldest living tribal hunting gathering ways, living around the Lake Eyasi in Central Tanzania. It's a tribe that didn't change their hunter-gatherer existence for more than 10000 years. Observing the hunter gatherer tribes of Africa one could mark the Hadza as the last of active hunting gathering tribes. By the observing their DNA, one could not relate the Hadza with any generally known pool or tribe other than the Pygmies. Their language is mostly composed of clicks, and this shows a complete isolation of the Hadza language, both traditionally and technically.

Expiration date for spices

Expiration date for spices
When it comes to spices, almost every kitchen has a lot of them. A large number of people is lead by the rule "six months" - changing the complete spices every six months - but it seems that it is too early. Besides, spices are not exactly cheap.

How much and which spice can endure?
* Gound spices (nutmeg, cinnamon, turmeric): 2-3 years
* Grasses and herbs (oregano, parsley, basil): 1-3 years
* Seasonal mix of spices: 1-2 years
* Complete spices (peppercorns, cinnamon sticks, cloves): 4 years
* Seeds: 4 years (except in the case of sesame and poppy seeds should be replaced at the latest after two years)
* Extracts: 4 years (except vanilla extract which takes forever)

Spices do not spoil so easily, especially if you keep them in a dry and dark place in airtight containers. If you doubt, check them by smell. If it smells intensely, it's good.

Some spices, such as poppy seeds, chili peppers, sesame seeds and red peppers can be kept refrigerated to remain fresh for a long time and be of intense colors. Do not make second thoughts whether to replace the spices or not - from the ones of poor quality you have nothing to gain.

Safe shopping Online

Safe shopping Online
If there is something wrong with the goods you buy on the website, tell the seller as soon as possible. Email or phone, and make a written note of the conversation or keep a copy of e-mail correspondence. Note that if you signed an acceptance note on receiving goods this does not mean you have signed away your right to reject. You still have a reasonable time to examine them. Letting the seller try to put faulty goods right has no effect on your rights, if the repair fails, you still have any right to reject that you had when you agreed to the repair. Once you have, in the legal sense, accepted goods, you lose your right to a full refund. You can only claim compensation, and you have to keep your claim to a reasonable amount. You have the same rights when you buy goods in a sale as at any other time; the seller cannot get away with disclaimers saying there are no refunds on faulty sale goods. You also have the same rights even if you lose your receipt, but the onus will be on you to prove where and when you bought the goods. If you buy goods privately you have fewer rights than when you buy from a trader. Privately bought goods do not have to be free of faults, but they must be as described. The general rule is ‘buyer beware’ so make sure you check that you are getting a good buy.

Happy birthday Popeye!!!

Happy birthday Popeye!!!
Cute cartoon character Popeye celebrates his 82. birthday. We all remember Popeye the Sailor Man thanks to spinach and his beloved one Olive. This cartoon character first appeared in the comic strip called 'Thimble Theatre' 17. January 1929. year, and it was invented by an American artist Elsie Crisler Segar. His film premiere, Popeye had in 1933 in the film "Betty Boop meets Popeye".

Over the years, Popeye has also appeared in many comic books, television cartoons, arcade and video games, hundreds of advertisements and peripheral products, and a 1980 live-action film directed by Robert Altman starring comedian Robin Williams as Popeye.

After Segar's death in 1938, many different artists were hired to draw the strip. Tom Sims, the son of a Coosa River channel-boat captain, continued writing Thimble Theatre strips and established the Popeye the Sailorman spin-off. Doc Winner and Bela Zaboly, successively, handled the artwork during Sims's run. Eventually, Ralph Stein stepped in to write the strip until the series was taken over by Bud Sagendorf in 1959. Sagendorf wrote and drew the daily strip until 1986, and continued to write and draw the Sunday strip until his death in 1994.

We remember him as a sailor that was tattoos of an anchor on both forearms and pipe in his mouth. The main opponent of his is Bluto, who wants to reclaim the girl Olive. Popeye always solved the problems with Bluto with the help of spinach, which gives him enormous power.

Some of us are even a little bit hated Popeye because as children we had to eat spinach to be "big and strong like Popeye. " and sometimes we thought why not chocolate gave Popeye such force, and not bitter, "spinach".

History of Radio

History of Radio
In 1894 Lord Kelvin, the president of the Royal Society, predicted that radio had no future. The first radio factory was opened 5 years later. After the invention of the transistor in 1947, several US electronics companies rejected the idea of a portable radio. At the time, radio sets were rather large. When Bell Labs put the transistor on the market in 1952 they had few takers apart from a small Japanese start-up called Sony. Sony introduced the transistor radio in 1954. The rest is radio history. Video never killed the radio star. In fact, today there are more than 7 000 radio stations in the world – more than 5 000 listed at Mike’s Radio World – attracting some 1.5 billion active listeners. In the West, more than 80% of people listen to radio, one in three of them listening via the Internet. 18% have downloaded shows after they were broadcast by visiting the station’s web site. A staggering 42% of people listen via digital TV, with 36% using a DAB radio. 21% use a digital music player, while 82% use the good old analogue radio.

Longest bridges in the world

Longest bridges in the world
The Lake Pontchartrain Causeway in New Orleans is the longest bridge in the world over a body of water, with a total length of 38,6 km (24 miles). It was completed in 1956. The Bang Na Expressway in Bankok, Thailand is even longer, at 54 km (33.5 miles), but mostly is an elevated highway. However, they are soon to be outdone by the 79.6 km Xian-Zhengzhou high speed railway bridge being built in China. It will be known as the Wei River Bridge. The most expensive bridge is the Seto-Ohashi-Kojima bridge in Japan. At 13,22 km (8,21 miles) long, it was built in 1988 at a cost of $8.3 billion. The world’s largest natural bridge is the Rainbow Bridge, tucked away among the rugged, isolated canyons at the base of Navajo Mountain, Utah, USA. It is a natural wonder. From its base to the top of the arch, it reaches 88,4 m (290 ft) – nearly the height of the Statue of Liberty – and spans 83,8 m (275 ft) across the river. The top of the arch is 12,8 m (42 ft) thick and 10 m (33 ft) wide.

Lightning strike

Lightning strike
Every second lightning strikes the earth 100 times. The odds of being struck by lightning, though, is about 1 in 700,000. Even so, lightning often strikes the same place twice. And it strikes men about 7 times more often than it does women. Americans Carl Mize and Roy Sullivan should know. Mize was struck 4 times. Sullivan was struck 7 times; he lost his big toenail in 1942, his eyebrows in 1969, had his hair set on fire twice, and the other times suffered slight burns. They were lucky. Lightning kills more than 50 people every year in the United States. What should one do to stay safe? Follow the National Weather Service advice: “When the thunder roars, go indoors.” For those who do survive, there is the Lightning Strike and Electric Shock International organization for advice and support.

Blue sunset on Mars

Blue sunset on Mars
NASA's vehicle "Opportunity" filmed the blue sunset from the surface of the Red Planet.

Although Mars is known as the Red Planet, sunsets on it is actually blue.

The bluish glow around the sun is due to the same dust particles that make Mars' sky appear red. The pictures were taken on Nov. 4 and Nov. 5 using three different filters on the rover's panoramic camera. The images, along with a second series of the Martian moon Phobos passing in front of the sun, inspired camera lead scientist Jim Bell with Cornell University to quote Proust in a NASA press release about the films.

So far the longest shot sunset on Mars was published by NASA's JPL laboratory in California. The material was taken with the camera on board NASA's "Opportunity" that explores Mars. It takes 17 minutes, but the film in the attached video is accelerated so that the set can be seen in just 30 seconds.

The history of chocolate

The history of chocolate
What is the number one foodstuff flavor in the world? - Chocolate of course. The pleasant feeling of eating chocolate is caused by a chemical called anadamide, a neurotransmitter which also is produced naturally in the brain. The first chocolate house in Europe was reputedly opened in London in 1657 by a Frenchman. In the early 19th century, after the introduction of cocoa powder in 1828, the English developed solid eating chocolate. The first chocolate box was introduced by Richard Cadbury in 1868, when he decorated a candy box with a painting of his young daughter holding a kitten in her arms. Cadbury also introduced the first Valentine’s Day candy box. In 1875, after experimenting for 8 years, Daniel Peter of Switzerland added milk to chocolate to create today’s familiar chocolate. His then sold his creation to his neighbor, Henri Nestle. The 17th century French Cardinal Mazarin never traveled without his personal chocolate maker. King Louis XIV of France established in his court the position of “Royal Chocolate Maker to the King.” The chocolate chip cookie is invented by Ruth Wakefield in 1933. M&M sweets were launched in military ration packs in 1940. Swedish confectionery salesman Roland Ohisson was buried in a coffin made entirely of chocolate, in 1973.

Five billion pizzas sold annually

Five billion pizzas sold annually
The pizza dates from about 200 BC. For centuries Italians and Greeks used flat round bread with toppings on it. But it was the Italians who added tomatoes and cheese to make the pizza as we know it. The world’s first pizzeria, Antica Pizzeria Port’ Alba in Naples, opened in 1830 and is still in business. The modern Pizza was created by Naples baker Raffael Esposito. In 1889, he created a pizza for King Umberto and Queen Margherita while they were visiting Naples, topping the pizza with red tomatoes, white cheese and green basil to resemble the Italian flag. He named the pizza in honor of Queen Margherita. The queen was keen to try this new food fad but were reluctant to visit the pizzeria. Thus she became the first person to order a take-away pizza. Today, more than five billion pizzas are sold annually, more than one billion in frozen form. Even so, it is second in popularity to the hamburger, of which more than 5,5 billion are sold annually. Interestingly, although US citizens eat twice as much meat as Europeans, the Margherita (without a meat topping) remains the most popular pizza choice in the US. The favorite pizza topping for Europeans is tuna

Christmas babies

Christmas babies
Worldwide, 3 babies are born every second. Every 8 seconds a baby is born in the United States. More babies are born on a Tuesday than any other day – except if Tuesday falls on Christmas day because fewer babies are born on Christmas day making a Christmas birthday a very special birthday indeed. Usually, on average about 220 000 babies are born each day but on Christmas day only about 172 000 babies are born. But the Christmas holiday is special for another reason: most babies are born in August and September meaning that more babies are conceived during Christmas season than any time. The most famous Christmas baby is, of course, Jesus Christ. Needless to say, Christmas is the day the birth of Jesus is celebrated… even though Jesus was probably born in March. The word “Christmas” means “Mass of Christ,” later shortened to “Christ-Mass.” The even shorter form “Xmas” – first used in Europe in the 1500s – is derived from the Greek alphabet, in which X is the first letter of Christ’s name: Xristos, therefore “X-Mass.”

Happy Mother’s Day!

Happy Mother’s Day!
In honor of the Virgin Mary, early Christians celebrated the festival on the fourth Sunday in Lent. In England, an ecclesiastical order decreed the dedication as Mothering Sunday. The event was not celebrated nationally in the United States until Julia Ward Howe suggested Mother’s Day in 1872. In 1877, on the second Sunday of May, Juliet Calhoun Blakeley stepped in for the Reverend Myron Daugherty when the reverend became distraught, apparently because an anti-temperance group had forced his son to spend the night in a saloon. Proud of their mother’s achievement, Charles and Moses Blakeley encouraged others to honor a Mother’s Day. In the 1880?s the Methodist church began celebrating Mother’s Day in Blakeley’s honor. Various efforts were made to honor Mother’s Day nationally in the US but it received official recognition only after Anna Jarvis organized a series of Mother’s Day Work Clubs. The first Mother’s Day was celebrated in Grafton, West Virginia, on May 10, 1908, in the church where Jarvis’s mother had taught Sunday School. The Mother’s Day International Association was founded on 12 December 1912, and President Woodrow Wilson designated the second Sunday of May as Mother’s Day in the US, in 1914.

It is known that the ladies in the red are attractive to men. A new study suggests that the reason is in men's nature and instincts. In fact, scientists say that the fact that men want to get closer to 'the woman in the red' can be explained by evolution.

The researchers worked with two groups of men, and some of participants in a group was shown a photo of a woman in red and the other a woman in a blue dress.

After they were told to write what would they like to ask the woman in the picture, it turned out that the issue of the first group, designed for a woman in a red, was a lot of fun and more provocative. In the second test than men were asked to place a chair next to their own, as they would put it in order to talk with the woman on the photography. The group, which saw a lady in red dress set a chair much closer than those who had the image of women in blue.

'The woman who has a red dress or skirt will be irresistible to man. Also, women who correspond with men over the Internet should put their photo on which they are dressed in red" says Nista Kaiser from the University of' Rochester in New York.

The fact that men have a desire to be closer to the women in red, is explained by natural instincts. For example, the red color in the animal world means the period when the most fertile female, and female baboons or chimpanzees are obviously very flushed at the time of their ovulation

The Water Bear

The Water Bear
Tardigrades (or water bears) are microscopic, water-dwelling, segmented animals with eight legs. They were first described by Johann August Ephraim Goeze in 1773. The name Tardigrada means “slow walker” and was given by Spallanzani in 1777. The name water bear comes from the way they walk, reminiscent of a bear’s. The biggest adults may reach a body length of 1.5 mm, the smallest below 0.1 mm. Freshly hatched larvae may be smaller than 0.05 mm. More than 1000 species of tardigrades have been described. The most convenient place to find tardigrades is on lichens and mosses. Other environments are dunes, beaches, soil and marine or freshwater sediments, where they may occur quite frequently. Tardigrades often can be found by soaking a piece of moss in spring water. Tardigrades are polyextremophiles and are able to survive in extreme environments that would kill almost any other animal. Some can survive temperatures close to absolute zero, temperatures as high as 151 °C (303 °F), 1,000 times more radiation than other animals such as humans, nearly a decade without water, and even the vacuum of space.

Old Man of the Lake

The Old Man of the Lake is the name given to a 30-foot (9 m) tall tree stump, most likely a hemlock, which has been bobbing vertically in Oregon's Crater Lake since at least 1896.
At the waterline, the stump is about 2 feet (60 cm) in diameter and stands approximately 4 feet (120 cm) above the water. The surface has been bleached white by the elements. The exposed end of the floating tree is splintered and worn but wide and buoyant enough to support a person's weight.[1]
Fontinalis, a moss that is present in the waters of Crater Lake at a depth of 394 feet (120 m), also grows on the Old Man of the Lake, the only place the moss is found near the surface.[2]

[edit] History

Joseph S. Diller published the first geology of Crater Lake in 1902, the same year the area became a national park. In his work, Diller briefly describes a great stump in the lake that he had found six years earlier. Thus, in 1896, The Old Man floated just as it does at present, giving it a documented age of more than one hundred years.[1]

Movements of The Old Man have long been observed. In 1896, Diller established that The Old Man could travel, by tying baling wire around the log and pulling it a short distance. Five years later, Diller observed the Old Man to be 0.25 miles (400 m) from where he had previously noted its location.[1] The earliest known photograph of the trunk dates to this period.[3]
As the result of an inquiry from Washington, D.C. as to its precise location, the project of recording The Old Man's location was undertaken between July 1 and September 30, 1938.[4] Those observations indicated that The Old Man of Crater Lake travels quite extensively, and sometimes with surprising rapidity. Since it can be seen virtually anywhere on the lake, boat pilots commonly communicate its position to each other as a general matter of safety.[1]
During one three-month period of observation in 1938, The Old Man traveled at least 62.1 miles (99.9 km). Not surprisingly, the days on which the greatest movements occurred were days of relatively high wind and waves.[4]
In 1988, submarine explorations were conducted in the lake, and the scientists decided to tie The Old Man off the eastern side of Wizard Island to neutralize the navigational hazard until their research work was complete.
As of January 2012, tour boats regularly pass The Old Man on their journeys to view the sights around Crater Lake.[5] The clarity of the lake's water allows one to see far down The Old Man's length.
